Kyoto is busy. These two hotels are not. Each has natural hot-spring water and a garden at its centre, and each gives you a reason to slow down before you head out. Then, five experiences from XPERISUS, a Japanese travel company, show how the rest of a trip can stay just as unhurried.
ROKU KYOTO: hot springs at the foot of the hills
ROKU KYOTO, LXR Hotels & Resorts sits at the foot of the three Takagamine peaks in northern Kyoto, with the Tenjin River running through the grounds (ROKU KYOTO). Its outdoor thermal pool uses natural hot-spring water from neighbouring Shozan Resort Kyoto and is open all year (ROKU KYOTO).
ROKU KYOTO, LXR Hotels & Resorts sits at the foot of the three Takagamine peaks in northern Kyoto, with the Tenjin River running through the grounds (ROKU KYOTO).
The days here are built around the setting. You can float in the warm pool in a guided thermal floating meditation, join morning yoga in the Shozan gardens, or use the tent sauna by the pool (THE ROKU SPA). The spa’s signature oil is made with Kitayama cedar, the hotel’s symbol tree.
Hands-on time is local, too. Make washi paper with Tenjin River water, as people here did in the Heian era, or try pottery with clay from the hotel grounds (ROKU KYOTO activities). At restaurant TENJIN, the cooking follows the season with Kyoto ingredients, and some seats sit on the engawa beside the river (TENJIN). The hotel does not say the produce is organic.
The hotel lists a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating and a MICHELIN Key for 2026 (ROKU KYOTO awards).

HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO: a garden beside Nijo-jo Castle
HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO stands next to Nijo-jo Castle, on the site of the Mitsui family’s Kyoto residence (HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO). The hotel wraps around a 1,300㎡ courtyard garden by landscape designer Shunsaku Miyagi, planted so that each season shows (the garden).
The hot spring is drawn from about 1,000 metres below the hotel (thermal spring). For more privacy, two private onsen rooms of over 100㎡ each have their own Japanese garden, and host meditation yoga, yoga nidra with singing bowls and a water meditation (private onsen). Mornings can start with a breathing session on the engawa of SHIKI-NO-MA, facing the garden (wellness), and tea at CHAKYO is overseen by So’oku Sen of the Mushakouji Senke school (CHAKYO).
For food, TOKI cooks French with stock made from Kyoto’s soft water and seasonal Kyoto produce (TOKI). FORNI follows the 24 terms of the old solar calendar (FORNI). The hotel does not say the produce is organic. Its spa holds a Forbes Travel Guide 2026 Five-Star rating, as listed by the hotel (spa).

Five ways to keep the trip quiet with XPERISUS
XPERISUS is a Japanese company that builds private, customised experiences. It sells them through its membership site and through travel advisors outside Japan (XPERISUS). Here are five of its published examples.
- Kyoto court cuisine. Taste and learn about yusoku ryori, the court cooking of Imperial Kyoto, at a ryotei founded in 1722, with sake from a centuries-old brewery in Fushimi.
- Koyasan. Spend time in the mountain temple town founded by the monk Kukai more than 1,200 years ago, where monks still live in many of the temples. XPERISUS frames it around calming the mind and keeping empty space, yohaku, in your life.
- Tokyo art, your way. Specialist-led art tours with Warehouse TERRADA, shaped around what you already like, from museums to collecting.
- Yakushima. Japan’s first natural World Heritage island, toured in a LEXUS RZ450e electric car with a personal butler, with food, trekking, ocean time and stays arranged with Sankara Hotel.
- Golden Gai after dark. For a livelier night, an immersive ghost-story bar walk in Shinjuku’s Golden Gai, made with Shochiku.
How to put it together
A simple shape is a few nights at each Kyoto hotel: ROKU KYOTO for the hills and river, then HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO for the city, gardens and tea. Add Koyasan or Yakushima for a longer trip. Ask Allie to plan it.
