The Yucatán Peninsula gives you two very different trips: the Caribbean coast around Tulum, with beach yoga and turquoise water, and the quiet interior, with restored haciendas, cenotes and Mayan sites. You can do both in a week.

Should you stay in Tulum or inland in the Yucatán?

Quick answer

It depends on whether you want the beach or the stillness. The coast (Tulum, Xpu-Há, the Riviera Maya) is for swimming, beach yoga and sunrise walks. The interior (around Mérida and Valladolid) is for hacienda stays, cenote swims and Mayan sites like Chichén Itzá, with far fewer crowds after dark. A split stay works well.

Which Tulum and Yucatán stays did High Vibe Vacay check?

What is a cenote and can you swim in one?

It depends on the cenote. Cenotes are natural sinkholes in the Yucatán's limestone, filled with fresh groundwater; many are open for swimming, some only for viewing. Many ask you to rinse off sunscreen first. Chablé Yucatán and Wakax Hacienda each have one on property.

When is the best time to visit the Yucatán?

It depends on heat and storms. The drier, cooler months generally run from about December to April. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and sargassum seaweed can reach Caribbean beaches in warmer months; check current conditions before booking.
